Turn Your London Home into a Sanctuary this Spring and Summer
No-one here in the UK can fail to have heard of the concept of Mindfulness these days. A way of dealing with the stresses and strains of today’s world, it’s a practice which can be applied to most areas of our lives – and especially our London home.
For, at the end of the day whether it’s our own property or we’re renting, home is still the place where we can unwind best. And if we don’t feel relaxed when we close the front door behind us then there are plenty of things we can do to better our chances of that. Here are some of our favourites:
Tips to turn your London home into a serene space
Get in some greenery
Plants aren’t only soothing to look at – thanks to their green leaves, but they also make us breathe easier by filtering out carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. By allowing touches of the outdoors to come indoors we’re also giving a nod to nature and wellbeing. So, suspend vines and creepers from the ceilings or weave them in and out of room dividers, line the kitchen windowsill with herbs and invest in a terrarium for the bedroom or living room coffee table. Treat your London home to a lovely colourful bunch of fresh flowers from the market every week. You’ll notice the difference and be glad you did.
But then, maybe you’re the type who ends up being the kiss of death to all green living organisms? Well, why not opt for images of plants in your home instead to get you in that particular outdoors headspace? It could be in the form of wallpaper, curtains or cushions. And, certainly, there are some fabulous green leaf-inspired designs on trend at the moment – our favourite right now is from London designers Prestigious Textiles (even just getting a couple of metres for cushion covers could really brighten your place up):
Hanker after a home spa
Invest in a rain showerhead where you can stand under the shower and melt under a lovely warm, fast, stream of water, pretending you’re in the tropics – rather than the bathroom in your London home. Well, we can all dream…. Meanwhile, make sure you have a big white fluffy towel to step in to afterwards – and get a pair of those white terry towelling slippers that spas all have to really get you in a pampering mood.
Before you get in the shower or bath though, considering making your own face mask or scrub using kitchen cupboard staples such as oats, yoghurt, honey and banana (check online for quick, easy facial recipes). It’s quicker and much cheaper than buying fancy face creams any day.
Nurture those natural materials
Recycled wood has a lovely ‘natural’ feel and always looks great when fashioned into a contemporary coffee table, bookcase or desk. It’s also great to use for accessories in your London homes such as picture frames, coasters and lamp bases.
Ceramic, porcelain or terracotta tiles make lovely ‘natural’ coasters or trivets. When painted they can also be propped up on a fireplace or a dressing table as unusual decorative pieces in their own right.
Soak up some sunlight
Now that summer is very definitely on its way you’ll want to get as much of those health-giving rays of sunshine as possible. So consider swapping the curtains for bamboo blinds you can roll up during the day with a light voile curtain over the glass if you value your privacy or the property is at ground level. Double the dose of sunshine by installing a couple of large mirrors to bounce the rays around the room.
